My friend Laurie and I went to the new (well newer anyway) Cabella's in Rogers, MN to sketch. These hunting gear superstores (we have another in Owatonna, MN) have lots of taxidermy specimens set up in what can only be described as energetic dioramas (baboons and hyenas fighting, lions killing zebras). I like that you can get so close to the specimens (for the most part), and the interesting range of species. I have long been interested in Warthogs (I tried to buy a stuffed one in 2001 but the shop owner wasn't parting with it, which is just as well as Dottie was still around then and one wonders what she would have made of that), and got a chance to study another specimen for a bit.
