This bird was tucked away in a corner at the end of a row. He moved almost constantly! I watched him for a long time wanting to draw, but feeling daunted by his constant movement. Interest in his unusual shape won out, silent observation paid off. See the small sketch at the right which shows his leg and body proportions. This was a leggy bird, tall with a compact body. His crate labeled him a Modern Black-Breasted Red. I don't know if the "modern" in his name means that he is a recent development in breeding. I don't know when the "modern" period is said to have begun in poultry. All I do know is that he was unusual and eye catching.
