journal page

One of the most frustrating things for me when I get sick, is that I don't have live things at home to draw any more. (When Emma and Dottie were alive of course the most frustrating thing about being sick was keeping up our extensive walk schedule when I mentally wanted to but physically didn't!)

I had prepainted this page with some metallic two-toned rubberstamp ink, leaving only narrow bands of uninked paper to draw on. I might have had some idea of what I would do with this, a landscape perhaps? However when I got to this page and was still housebound it seemed sensible to pull up a couple of my photos of Canada Geese onto the computer screen, sit back and sketch. It's more fun to draw from life, but it's more fun to draw than not draw.

Something else happened in this journal (besides the breakout rash of red paint). I had just cleaned the studio before getting sick and had a book that was left out that I was saving for making altered books. I started cutting pages out of it and then cutting text out of those pages. Those strips of text were then pre-pasted onto the journal pages. Sometimes they make a sort of sense with the image. I think this was initially the high fever telling me things made sense, later as the fever abated I just enjoyed it. It's something I do every so often in journals, but for this journal after a few pages I decided to do it all the way through. (There are only a couple pages without pasted text. The determination that I would finish this journal before the end of the cold fed this text game as well.

The sketches on this spread are made using a Staedtler Pigment Liner 0.1 that had a bent tip and was almost out of ink. I had to go over areas way more than I usually do, but hey, I had the time.

Note that this page is out of order, but I didn't notice it until the other web pages had been prepared. It actually follows the rock and comes before the pickle! I put this disorder down to dealing with a new scanning interface!

The text excerpt is about fireworks, and what someone thought they might have seen. I guess that plays into goose eyes after all.
