If one looks through the complete journal pages for the first quarter of 2006 it looks like I move seamlessly from the dog obsession phase to the bird obsession phase. Stopping now and then to paint a pear.
Perhaps in some ways this is true. I spent a lot of time at the Bell in January and February. I know it will still be around for at least another year, but I want to draw and paint as much as I can while it is still within 15 minutes walking from my home. (The new St. Paul campus home will be more of a hassle to get to.) These birds, however, are at the Science Museum. Sketching friends Heather and Janice and I went once again to draw from the exhibits. We end up being pretty silly, but we do get a lot of work done. The right page is a sketch, from the side, of some stuffed grouse all grouped in a row. We were sketching to discover pattern. What struck me, from the sea of camouflage brown, was the negative space around their heads and beaks, all individual. |
