A change of venue, but still taxidermy specimens. I went with a group of 6 people (Tom showed up later so he isn't listed on this first page; also present were Heather, Janice, and Ken and Roberta) to sketch the specimens at the Maplewood Nature Center. Ken, who is also a cartoonist, started the day by giving me a photocopy of one of his gopher drawings. I promptly glued it to my page with glue stick borrowed from Heather (she really took my advice to travel with it to heart!).
I was amazed at the badger's long front claws, the better to move dirt with when tunneling. I was also amazed at how compact the body of the badger is. Again, I'm sure this helps his tunneling efforts. After 3 hours of sketching we did get a bit rowdy. We have a photograph of the badger wearing some really large, dark rimmed sunglasses! In fact we have photos (thanks to Tom, who is an fabulous photographer) of these sunglasses on pretty much everything. Clearly we all needed the cake we went for afterwards. I have to say this again, if you can find people who are serious about drawing, but not serious about life (i.e., they have a sense of humor) you can get a lot accomplished in an afternoon of sketching, beyond the pages that you fill in your journal. We all laughed a lot. |
