bookbinding

This selection of covers shows a number of ways in which covers can be altered and decorated using a variety of paints and media. The back left book cover (blue) has a window for an insert (here an abstract watercolor). The far right book (black) has a debossed area (unpainted) in which a sunken label can be attached. In addition to using these books as samples of cover alteration techniques, I used these structures to experiment with various exposed spine stitches. I used stitches documented by Keith A. Smith in his book, 1-, 2-, and 3-Section Sewings: Non-adhesive Bindings, Vol. II. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in working with exposed spine stitches. I find his diagrams fantastic!
