I was invited to spend a long weekend with my friend Karen at her family's cabin in northern Wisconsin. Her husband Steve, 16-year-old daughter Rachel, and their beagle Lucky were also there. Rachel also brought along her friend Amanda. While I was there I kept the following travel journal.
I made the small, 7 x 5 3/4 inch landscape format journal at the beginning of June. For text paper I used my last remaining sheet of Lion's Cover, a discontinued paper from Barcham Green Mill. It is thin, but takes a pen work and watercolor washes well; at least in the way I like to work. It has a pleasant nubby texture that adds interest to the washes. The book had the added benefit of being small and light and easy to fit in a small fanny pack. I'm still working with my left shoulder problems and didn't want to have anything heavy to carry. I took both my gouache and watercolor miniature palettes that are about 1 x 2 inches and contain 11 colors each. I also took my larger 3 x 5 inch or so gouache travel palette in case I wanted to do any large landscapes on extra paper that I brought along. I didn't. I worked all weekend simply in the journal with the small watercolor palette and my Niji waterbrush. I used a Payne's Grey Nexus pen for the ink. (On one page I used a purple Nexus pen for the drawing only.) I covered the small journal with a dark purple book cloth and decorative paper that I had painted in a splatter pattern. Later when we were on the trip I spoke to Karen about a Charles Reid video I'd seen and his love of splattering paint. It became something we played around with over the weekend and so it seemed an appropriate way to handle the title page when I got back on Sunday night. |
