When you are the house guest of a former lumber man you learn a lot about trees. I learned to tell the difference between several kinds of spruce, pine, cedar, and birch while I was in Grand Marais. In addition I was introduced to Moose Maple, which is more of a shrub than a tree, but has the characteristic seeds. The fun thing about these is that they are very small and brilliantly reddish magenta in color.
I painted this one with gouache and touched it up with a little dark colored pencil. |
