journal page

A blue jay sketch I really wasn't happy with (Pentel Color Brush and gouache), so I put a torn paper frame around the area I liked. Later I ended up altering his image digitally into something quite fun.

I'm in my second journal of the year (also roughly 8 x 8 inches). This is made with Richardson cold press 140 lb. watercolor paper. I made this journal a couple years ago and had never used it. Then in January I decided it was time. I didn't enjoy working on it as a journal, however. (I think the paper is great for painting.) The sizing never seemed to work well with any pen that I selected. And the cold press texture was just too texured for how I typically like to work in my journals.

People kept telling me that I could stop and go on to another journal with some other paper. It's not like I don't have a couple journals waiting on the shelves. I've never done that though. I have a compulsion about completing a journal. I never know what I'm going to learn in the process, even if the process is a struggle with media and paper.

I learned a lot working on this paper. And built up a whole lot of gratitude for the choices and materials I have. And since I didn't enjoy working on the paper as a journal I spent a lot more time working on paintings outside my journals, always a good thing. And of course I pushed through it quickly.
