journal page

I prepaint several page spreads throughout my journals. It's my way of both getting rid of the blank page and starting a texture or layering effect, and my way to set a little test for myself.

The moment I saw these small Chinese ceramics I knew I wanted to sketch them. The next page in my journal was covered with burnt sienna and blue ink brush strokes. I sketched with my Staedtler Pigment Liner (a 01 Calligraphy that my friend Judi scored for me in Taiwan since they are no longer available here), and then added some indanthrene blue shadows. Pages like this make me happy. They make me believe in serendipity.

The ceramic figures in these cases were amazing. They looked like Disney and Star Wars characters. My friends joined me at this point but we never could work out which sign of the zodiac the creature on the right was supposed to be.
