Last year Danny Gregory visited me and we were able to go sketching together. While I dragged him around to zoos he kept pushing me to draw architecture. I typically don't. But since last August I have been pushing myself to do it more frequently. This page is for Danny. I even stood in the bright sun and breathed second hand smoke to finish it!
This Chinese Lion sits at the old entrance to the Minneapolis Institute of Art. I've never looked this closely at these statutes. Taking the time to draw them on this day I realized that the pattern on its pedestal contains a dragon's head and various birds. From a distance, walking by, I never saw that. That's the "value added" in stopping to sketch. If you want to see a lot of really fun cityscape sketches you should check out Danny's webblog at www.dannygregory.com. He recently spent time in Rome and has lively sketches of fountains, public squares, and various interiors. |
